Thursday Night Previews :Hidden Figures starts well

Underworld: Blood Wars was the only true wide release of the week, but it was Hidden Figures’ wide expansion that generated the best result at $1.2 million. This is more impressive, as dramas tend to underperform action films in previews; for example, Selma pulled in just $400,000 during its previews. That film earned $11.31 million during its first weekend of wide release and Hidden Figures is expected to double that figure this weekend.

Underworld: Blood Wars also had previews last night, but the studio isn’t reporting any figures. We predicted the film would make just under $13 million this weekend, but if the studio isn’t even going to report its preview numbers, that could be way too optimistic.

International box office: Rogue one threepeats to tenth position

rogue-one-a-star-wars-story-24-newsRogue One: A Star Wars Story added $45.8 million in 55 markets to its running tally, which now sits at $350.0 million internationally and $775.0 million worldwide. By the end of Sunday, the film was already in tenth place for the year and while it is not doing as well internationally as it is domestically, it is still on pace to hit fifth place by as early as this weekend. Its biggest market is the U.K., where it has pulled in $64.4 million, but the U.K. might not stay on top for long, because the film opens in China this weekend.

Sing rose to second place with $25.3 million on 6,618 screens in 56 markets for totals of $98.0 million internationally and $264.5 million worldwide. The film had no major market openings this past weekend, but it did score $3.2 million on 287 screens in Australia for a total of $8.7 million after a full week of release. The film has yet to open in six major markets, including Italy, where it opens this weekend.

The Great Wall earned third place with $24.4 million over the weekend for a total of $154.5 million so far. The film’s early reviews are mixed, but it might break even just from its run in China. It will be very interesting to see how well it does here and if some of its Chinese cast can land other roles in Hollywood.

Assassin’s Creed entered the top five for the first time earning fourth place with $22.0 million in 49 markets for a still early international total of $44.1 million. The film’s biggest opening market was Germany, where it managed second place with $5.3 million, including previews.

Depending on what source you look at, Moana earned fifth place with $21.3 million in 28 theaters over the weekend, for totals of $189.1 million internationally and $405.5 million worldwide. The film opened in Australia with $6.3 million during its opening week. It needs about $100 million more to break even before the home market and it has yet to open in Brazil, South Korea, Scandinavia, Japan, and other smaller markets. It will get there.

Estimates had Passengers in fifth place, but final numbers put it in sixth with $20.47 million on 7,485 screens in 62 markets for an international total of $56.76 million. The film’s biggest opening market was France, where it earned third place with $3.66 million on 537 screens over the weekend for a total opening of $4.04 million. Its biggest market overall is the U.K., where the film has made $10.08 million, including $2.39 million on 855 screens this past weekend.

DANGAL APPROACHES PK LIFETIME COLLECTION

Dangal is preforming very good in the box office and surely got one of the best trending since 3 Idiots. At the end of its 2nd week dangal has added 115.9 crore taking its collection to 313.4 crore. If the film continues the same trending it may surpass the collection of the biggest earner of Bollywood which is PK in its third weekend itself. PK whose lifetime collection lies at 341 crore seems a easy task for the film. A 400 crore seems to be possible if the film holds well in coming weeks. Simply fantastic.
